A contemporary Odyssey from Portugal's finest cineaste, Manuel de Oliveira, this quiet, stirring drama of subtly epic proportions was made when director Oliveira was 96-years-old. Beautiful young history professor Rosa Maria (Oliveira veteran Leonor Silveira) is escorting her precocious eight-year-old daughter Maria Joana (Filipa de Almeida) on a cruise from their native Portugal to Bombay. The first half of the film is a history lesson illustrated through dialectical exchange between the two. Prompted by tourist attractions in France, Italy, Greece, and Turkey, Rosa weaves together a narrative of myth, legend, and fact, often blurring the line that separates them. The second half of the film is dominated by one long dinner conversation, when Rosa joins the captain of her ship (John Malkovitch, BEING JOHN MALKOVITCH, KLIMT) at his table. They are also accompanied by a successful French executive (Catherine Deneuve, DANCER IN THE DARK, 8 WOMEN), a former Italian model (Stefania Sandrelli), and a Greek actress (Irene Papas). As their discussion unfolds, with each speaking in his or her native language, the ship moves toward a startling conclusion that will reveal the director's bold message about the contemporary global community.

    An Inaccurate Talking Picture

    By Tony  Jul 11, 2008

Pros: Leonor Silveira filmed at historical sites.

Cons: Wrong Historical Dates, poor and empty dialogues

The movie is set on a cruise to Bombay, the ship stops in Marseille, Napoles, Athens, Cairo and Aden. The star in the movie, Rosa Maria, a Portuguese History Teacher, travels with her young daughter, Maria Joana, to meet her husband. The dialogue be...tween mother and daughter is mostly the mother playing the role of tour guide to the daughter, until she catches the eye of the ship's captain (John Malkovich). What I find amazing in this story is the scriptwriting. Yes it is amazing that Portuguese nationals would not know the year Vasco da Gama's fleet arrived in India (1498). While in Cairo, Rosa Maria (Leonor Silveira) meets a Portuguese tourist (Luis Miguel Cintra) who is a popular actor in Lisbon and tells her and his daughter that Vasco da Gama arrived in India in 1494, 4 years earlier. Although an History Teacher, Rosa Maria seems to agree and makes no effort to explain to her daugther the correct date of the most relevant event of Portuguese National History? I wonder, did the scriptwriter failed his Portuguese school certificate or is it one of Manuel de Oliveira's intrigues? In a movie which clearly intends to show the importance of the Portuguese Discoveries, it is a pity that Manoel de Oliveira or his team couldn't get the date of Vasco da Gama's arrival right. Can not help wonder what Mr. Oliveira's answer would be as to why the wrong date, or if he noticed it at all? Read more Less
