Great new album, and I consider myself a U2 fan, Sting, Depeche Mode, DMB etc..... great album. -
Album of the Year
, August 21, 2002Reviewer: sjcali80 - See all sjcali80's reviews5 of 8 Yahoo! Users found this A Rush of Blood to the Head review helpful This CD is absolutely amazing. Please play and sit back and listen to the album from start to finish because Coldplay has really outdone themselves with this new release. The group maintains their incredibly unique sound and haunting vocals by Chris, but their sound is so clean.
Parachutes was the work of some unrecognized and semi-unproduced artists. It was the heartfelt music of some young men who spent most of their time playin music in their garage or bedrooms.
AROBTTH is so much more than that. Its still incredibly personal. But the lyrics better, cleaner, and less repetative. The music is as clean as can be. These guys sound like they've been playing together for decades.
Here's a rundown...
Politik - Great start to a great album. The guitar is almost angry in this one. A new sound for the group.
In My Place - A great song as I'm sure you've all heard it on the radio. Very catchy guitar riff.
God Put A Smile Upon Your Face - This is a very happy song. Grabs you in the beginning and keeps you singin along till the end
The Scientist - This song is by far the most beautiful song I think Coldplay has ever done. It just reaches into your heart and reminds you just how strong love can be and how much it hurts to lose it. Warning...girls may cry after hearing this song.
Clocks - This would be my pick for the next single. I like it even better than In My Place. It catches you at the beginning and keeps you going till the end.
Daylight - I didn't like this song so much when I first heard it. Its such a different sound for Coldplay and I wasn't ready for it. But its become a favorite of mine. It sounds kinda middle-eastern or arabic in the beginning.
Green Eyes - A simple song. Nothing too exciting about it. But not bad either. A cute sing-along.
Warning Sign - Again...great song. The music is very clean and really matches the emotions of the lyrics as they progress through the song. Chris ends this one beautifully with his aching lyrics and beautiful piano solo.
Whisper - Not too excited about this song. Kinda bland and repetative. This album wouldn't have been any worse without this song.
A Rush Of Blood To The Head - An almost evil song. You get the feeling of anger and revenge after listening to it. Good song nonetheless.
Amsterdam - Absolutely wonderful this song. If you're a fan of Chris' piano work, you'll be addicted to this song. Beautiful lyrics and vocals and the piano accents him perfectly. The band actually comes in at the end for about a minute and then Chris wraps it all up again...just him and the piano. He "cuts us loose." :-)
All in all...best album of the year. You're insane if you don't buy it. ...

Pro Reviews: A Rush of Blood to the Head
| EXPERT RATING: From AMG Reviews After touring in support of their debut album, Parachutes, Coldplay was personally and professionally exhausted. Frontman Chris Martin insisted he was dry; by the time they closed their European tour in summer 2001, he hadn't written a song in months. The U.K. music press immediately pounced on the idea of Coldplay calling it quits, but somewhere lurked the beauty of "In My Place." The spirit and soul of this ballad allowed Coldplay to pull it together to make a second album. What came from such anguish and inquisition was A Rush of Blood to the Head. Coldplay has surely let it all go on this record. Acoustics are drowned out by Jon Buckland's riveting guitar work, and vocally, Martin has sharpened his falsetto, refining his haunting delivery. It's a strong album; you can feel, hear, and touch the blood, sweat, and tears behind each song, and that's exactly what Coldplay was going for. Co-producer Ken Nelson and mixer Mark Pythain (the team behind the blissful beauty of Parachutes) allowed Coldplay to make an album that's initially inaccessible, but that's what makes it intriguing. Lush melodies and a heartbreak behind the songs are there, but also a newfound confidence. From the delicate, shimmery classic "In My Place" to the piano surge of "The Scientist," Coldplay exudes an honest passion. The disco haze of "Daylight" and the lovedrunk ballad "Green Eyes" are divine examples of solid lyrical arrangements, but "Politik" and the stunning guitar-driven "God Put a Smile Upon Your Face" project a nervy edge to the band. Echoes of early post-punk showcase Coldplay's ballsy musicianship. Don't fret -- it's not exactly rock roll, but Radiohead, Echo the Bunnymen, and The Smiths aren't exactly rock roll either, and they're well-loved. "Yellow" didn't follow the rock formula, but it sold well, and similarly A Rush of Blood to the Head might not instantly grab listeners, but it's not tailored that way. It pushes you to look beyond dreamy vocals for a musical inner core. Regardless of the band still being in their mid-twenties, they've made an amazing record, and if it ends up being their last, A Rush of Blood to the Head didn't sugar coat anything. It's a bittersweet design no matter what. - MacKenzie Wilson, All Music Guide |
