    The White Album ?

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Jun 6, 2004 | 42 out of 53 found this A Ghost Is Born review helpful

    Pros: Extraordinry Creative Spark

    Cons: Some Tough Sledding

While Wilco has been evolving rapidly, morphing from one lineup to others; Jeff Tweedy's ambition has grown exponentially. As a result, Wilco has asked fans to adjust sensibilities with each release. Those who have been waiting to hear another &q...uot;Casino Queen" (AM) may well wait forever! Those looking for the organic slop of "Being There," or the lyrical Pop of "Summerteeth" will probably find a way to navigate the challenges of "Ghost Is Born." Fans of Yankee Hotel Foxtrot will probably simply adore it.Tweedy and the band are now fully into found sound, synths, samples, loops, and collage, as well as songs. In 67 or so minutes of music, songs account for about half of the content of this sprawling release. Much like the Beatles' White Album, "Ghost Is Born" is a tour de force of creativity, and all the compositional skill Tweedy has been developing is amply displayed. But, achingly beautiful songs spin into loops and collages of noise that destroy any comforts the listener was developing with song structure. A Guitar/Piano/Vocal intro on the first track abruptly leads to wailing Neil Young inflected distorted, aggressive guitar that - well, continues for a while. One piece is over ten minutes, another is over 15 minutes! There's nothing wrong with that, per se. The first of the two, "Spiders (Kidsmoke)" is among the best songs on the disk. "Less Than You Think" has a song fragment at the beginning, and then turns into 13 minutes of some serious noise manipulation. It is artfully done, and there is real thought behind it, but few listeners will want to listen to it often. Fans of ambient music will like it a lot.OK, that's the bad stuff, and it's really not bad, just enormously challenging. The other tunes on the album are state of the art American art-rock. Tweedy really deserves to be considered in the league with Roger Waters, Peter Gabriel and Brian Eno, a league of extraordinary gentlemen whose first impulse is to walk the tightwire of experiment over the deep chasm of contemporary pop music. Only secondarily do they indulge their gifts and passions for song-style. U2 is probably the last band with something to lose to try half as much death-defying experimentation. Wilco, operating without any big hits to buffer them from industry paranoia, have managed to do more with less.In short, "Ghost Is Born" is a masterpiece if taken on its own terms. Everything Tweedy and company have learned is here, with the biggest surprise to this listener being the level of recording expertise on this release. Like on he "White Album," some self-indulgence is displayed, but artists should be allowed to indulge themselves when they have the talent displayed here. There is no dreck like "Why Don't We Do It In The Road" here.If you are the sort of person who wants your music predictable or safe, buy tunes by the doiwnload. If you want art, buy this album and listen carefully, and more than once. It's easily the best work I've heard this year, and the it's best of Wilco's ever-surprising career.Dave Hearn - Silhouette Multimedia Read more Less

    Another Gem

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Jul 2, 2004

Pros: Smart, creative, and at times catchy

Cons: I'd rather have 2 more songs than 10 minutes of feedback

Wilco is by far the most creative, relevant band of today.Just like U2 and The Beatles before them, their music matters and will be inspirational to other bands that follow. A Ghost Is Born is another classic example of just what this wonderful band ...is capable of. Favorite Tracks :Hummingbird, Muzzle of Bees, Theologians, The Late Greats, I'm A Wheel, Company In My Back. Skip "Less Than You Think".Maybe it was an inside joke, but I'd rather hear 2 more good songs than 10 minutes of droning distortion and feedback. Overall a very good CD, but Summerteeth is still their best release. Read more Less

    Simply Incredible

Pros: Merging Music Vibe, Fantastic Lyrics, Wilco evolves!!!

Cons: Third track rocks, but goes on and on, and on

I usually don't write reviews...but this CD is by far one of the best from Wilco, and probably up there in for best of the year. I love music, and fell for this CD hard after the first listen. Usually, it takes a few listens before I can sink m...y teeth into something, but this was the first listen...right out of the celphane wrapper, into the CD changer, through my nervous system into my heart...It is like rock merges with indie pop. I like it... Read more Less

A ghost is born a "masterpiece"

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Jun 26, 2004 | 0 out of 1 found this A Ghost Is Born review helpful

    Pros: Awesome album

    Cons: Not YHF

Wilco's 2002 YHF is the greatest rock album of this millenium and Wilco's new album AGIB is a masterpiece in its own right. Wilco fans do not expect another YHF but expect another great WIlco album. Wilco is the closest thing to the Beatles... I have ever heard and is the most talented band of my time. Jeff Tweedy is a genious and its good to hear he is off the handshake drugs.DDP.S. Wilco's joke on us, Less than what you think, is not going to get better after the 3rd minute so just skip the song once the music stops it just gets annoying. Read more Less

NOT even in the same building as the White Album

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Jun 25, 2004 | 0 out of 1 found this A Ghost Is Born review helpful

    Pros: Good production

    Cons: Weak songwriting

I really liked YHF, but gotta say that A Ghost is Born sounds forced, more of an attempt to expoit Wilco's new alt/rock fan base by providing minimal effort and musical cliches. It's generally an ok album at best, but after listening for the t...hird time, it became apparent that the music is extremely repetitive. The longer tunes are just long for the sake of being long. Spiders has a good bridge, but the verse portion of the song has this annoying bouncy-soft-electro beat which goes on forever. Less Than You Think is entirely unnecessary - nine minues of AM radio static is neither interesting nor innovative.Generally Ghost is to YHT as Amnesiac was to Kid A -- both are self-indulgent and duplicative attempts to get lightening to strike in the same place twice. But Wilco already blew its bag of studio tricks, and now appears to be scraping the bottom of the barrel to keep its new fans without offending its orignal fan base. And as you know, you can't please all the people all the time. Read more Less

The easiest album of diffucult music you will love

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Jun 21, 2004 | 2 out of 6 found this A Ghost Is Born review helpful

Pros: They have return with yet another classic

Cons: How does WILCO keep their inventive brains in motion?

Do you remember the one scene in the film I WANT TO BREAK YOUR HEART where the lead singer says to the guy whom he is firing, "Look, dude, the music is growing, with or without you..." and it's like the most pivotal moment and THE TRUTH.... Wilco's music grows. It not only grows by getting more complicated and having sound affects and noises, but it grows on YOU, the LISTENER. It almost like it attached itself on the membranes of your brain and forces you to listen and hear it. Songs like I'M SORRY # 32, THE DAY THE EARTH FELL DOWN, WARNER/TAMERLANE, and MR. T WHERE ARE YOU? all reveal that WILCO is perhap one of the greatest bands working today. Theyre sense of adventures in music is unmatched and I wish they would make a movie or a book every time they have a album or concert because frankly I have no idea how anyone could make such a record let alone make something special each time they pick up a instrument or write something down. long live WILCO and long live rock and roll with sound effects records that you can still sing along too because it's THAT good! unexpected expectance

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Jun 22, 2004 | 1 out of 4 found this A Ghost Is Born review helpful

    Pros: amazing lyrics

Cons: long (and i mean long) guitar/
    keyboard/
    distortion-ridden/
    isolation-rendering endings

when i first listened to summerteeth, i was instantly in love with it...not just a "hey, i could listen to that again" kind of like, but an "i'm going to listen to that over and over and over again, until it's burned into my br...ain" kind of love. a ghost is born is different...which is to be expected from wilco. come on, now--the band asks a little more of us each cd, don't you think? this time around they seem to be into slow, quiet starts that turn into heavy, rock n’ roll middles that turn into meandering, slightly annoying endings. but it’s a most satisfying annoyance, really. this cd is going to grow on me, i can feel it. :)tracks i'm already addicted to: "hummingbird" (has to be one of the greatest opening lines ever--"his goal in life was to be an echo"), "handshake drugs," "company at my back," "i'm a wheel." Pros: It had some great beats

Cons: I didn't like the music very much

The smooth entry of billy's newfound lyrical attention has some great attention to sleddingly detailed schtick.
