Synopsis: A Bridge Too Far (1977)
Synopis: Attenborough's ambitious, all-star adaptation (by William Goldman) of Cornelius Ryan's book, gives an account of the Battle of Arnhem. In 1944, the Allied powers attempt to expedite the end of the war with a costly operation to capture six bridges connecting Holland to Germany ended in Allied defeat. The film glides along showing perspectives from both sides of this epic battle as it unrolls. Concentrating mostly on the action this film also highlights the elation, horror and sheer waste of war.
For all the nerds out there (like me)all the hardware looks 100% accurate. Check out the PIAT team taking on the Tiger.
To sum; up this is a real boys film but is fairly accurate and by far the most realistic war film EVER! It deals with the emotional element without long weepy monologues. Eat your heart out Private Ryan! ...
