great companion piece to the LONGEST DAY
this is the most underrated of all ww2 classics
taken from CORNELIUS RYAN'S epic novel,it manages to be an anti-war movie,a tremendous action-packed experience & an enlighting epic all at the same time.director RICHARD ATTENBOROUGH has done a magnificent job of clearly & crisply retelling all the events leading to the absolutely unnecessary ARNHEM disaster.eye-popping performances by the entire star-studded cast which includes RYAN O'NEAL,SEAN CONNERY,ANTHONY HOPKINS,ROBERT REDFORD,DIRK BOGARDE,GENE HACKMAN,MICHAEL CAINE,EDWARD FOX,MAXIMILIAN SCHELL & WOLFGANG PREISS(in a superb cameo as RUNSTEDT).Was this review helpful? This is probably the War film to end all others! Featuring stunning battle scenes and moving performances from major stars. The film glides along showing perspectives from both sides of this epic battle as it unrolls. Concentrating mostly on the action this film also highlights the elation, horror and sheer waste of war.
For all the nerds out there (like me)all the hardware looks 100% accurate. Check out the PIAT team taking on the Tiger.
To sum; up this is a real boys film but is fairly accurate and by far the most realistic war film EVER! It deals with the emotional element without long weepy monologues. Eat your heart out Private Ryan!Was this review helpful? Yes - NoAll Star Cast/All Star Movie
This movie is a very close representation to the events which really happened over Holland during WWII. The casting will never be surpassed. A must see.
