Synopsis: A Ano Natsu, Ichiban Shizukana Umi (1991)
Synopis: Shigeru (Maki), a hearing-impaired sanitation worker, finds a broken surf board in a pile of garbage. He decides to mend the board and hit the beach. Shigeru anxiously attempts to catch a wave, unaware of the local's heckles and laughter. With the help of his girlfriend Takako (bearing the same hearing impairment), a local surf shop owner, and a large amount of determination, Shigeru goes on to become a first rate surfer and wins acceptance with the local beach crowd. , October 16, 2001Reviewer: Drew - See all Drew's reviewsFor those of you enamored with Beat Takeshi's other films like "Sonatine" or "Violent cop" then "Ano natsu, ichiban shizukana uni" will come as a shock. Literally translated as that summer, the most silent ocean, the story revolves around deaf-mute Shigeru and his on and off relationships with Takako (also deaf-mute) and surfing. Takeshi's masterful use of framing and color combine with Maki's silent, subdued acting to create a highly visual film. Overall, I highly suggest this movie to those with discriminating tastes. ...
