User Reviews: 30th Anniversary Collection 1963-1993

  • Overall:

A first (and last) Hollies hurrah!

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Dec 17, 1999

This set was years and years in the making and every fan will appreciate the effort! Though some of the remixing seems unneccessary, this is a pretty good collection to get if you're an avid Hollies' fan, or a casual admirer. Be warned though of two... things, #1, there's MUCH more Hollies' music than included here and #2, if you're reading this after 1999, the collection is out of print! Read more Less

Pro Reviews: 30th Anniversary Collection 1963-1993

  • All Music Guide

This three-CD, 57-track box set does a good if imperfect job of encapsulating the legacy of one of the British Invasion's better bands. This includes all of the Hollies' singles, A- and B-sides, from the '60s, as well as five previously unreleased tunes. The hits -- "I'm Alive," "Bus Stop," "On a Carousel," and others -- contain some of the finest beat harmonizing not done by the Beatles. The B-sides -- many of them originals, some of them never before available in the United States -- are often nearly equal in quality to the classic material. The compilation wisely touches upon only the essentials of their post-1970 singles ("Long Cool Woman" and "The Air That I Breathe"), and unwisely closes with three forgettable tracks from the early '90s. Don't be misled, however, that this box contains all of their best material -- their early albums, though inconsistent, featured a fair number of strong original tunes which remain little known beyond collector circles. It's a good set, with an e...xcellent booklet and thoroughly annotated discography, but not definitive. - Richie Unterberger, All Music Guide Read more Less

Biography

The Hollies

One of the best and most commercially successful pop/rock acts of the British Invasion, when the Hollies began recording in 1963, they relied heavily upon the RB/early rock roll covers that provided the staple diet for countless British bands of the time. They quickly developed a more distinctive style of three-part harmonies (heavily influenced by the Everly Brothers)... Read more
