    XR 250 Rating

By Yahoo! Shopping User  May 21, 2009

Pros: Great looking, Stong frame, Front Disk Brake

Cons: Plastic seat, Set handle bar height

I did a challange for Mongoose. I entered 3 big races and won 2 of them with this XR 250. I was competing against Specalized, GT, Cannondale, Diamondback, Fisher and other big name high dollar bikes to prove a point that a lower budget bike can do the same thing. A few downfalls of this bike is the weight and made me work harder for the win but over all a great bike at a great price. I love Mongoose bikes!

    awsome bike.

Pros: disc brake, full suspension, nice ride, excelent off road, durable

Cons: bit heavy, could use better front shifter, rear brake sometimes lock

my first mountian bike was a $30, 10 speed with no suspension. so when i got the xr 250 bike i fell in love with it, i feel like i can go any where with it, it took two years before i had to tune up the shifter. not a big deal, and the shocks were new to me, i would never buy a bike with out them now. the disc brake always gives me perfect gental stops. the only problem i had was with the rear brakes locking up. i just put a 4 inch spring into it and it works great. for the price this is one of the best deals.

Pros: Brakes are good, big tires very nice, mud flap works good, 21 speed fast, smooth ride

Cons: Pedal broke, shifter needs adjusted

Fast bike with good suspension, pedal broke easy, smooth fun bike works well. Works good when you are being chased. Big strong tires for big rocks and rough terrain.

    Mongoose XR250 Men's 26" Mountain Bike

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Apr 19, 2008 | 3 out of 3 found this 26" Mens' Mongoose XR250 Full-Suspension Mountain Bike review helpful

Pros: Aluminum frame, full suspension, hydraulic shocks

    Cons: Falcon derailer is junk

Bought the XR250 after putting over 3000 miles on my other Mongoose. Found the front derailer to be junk as it would not change gears. Replaced it with a Shimano and no more problem. Replaced the old style crank bearings with a nice sealed cartridge. Replaced the current rear brake pads to a larger pad. The ones that came on it were gone after a month. Very thin pads. The front disc brake has been virtually maintenance free. I would recommend changing the tires to street tread if you plan on riding on city streets. The nobby tires will flat wear you out on long rides. Keep the nobbies for the trails. A great bike for the price.

Ok, if you add some extras!

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Mar 18, 2008 | 3 out of 4 found this 26" Mens' Mongoose XR250 Full-Suspension Mountain Bike review helpful

Pros: Front disk brakes, Shimano shifting, cool appearance, big tires

Cons: WAY too heavy, no rear disk brakes, weird front mudguard, cheap-looking seat

Bottom line: If you're looking for a serious mountain bike, the Mongoose XR250 isn't going to cut it. The suspension is NOT made for heavy jumping, and the bike is very heavy (46 lbs, I think).

That being said, if you're a casual rider/off-roader, then this is a good value bike. Chances are, you'll want to upgrade to a more expensive bike once riding fever hits you. Just be ready, because REAL mountain bikes start in the THOUSANDS for cost. But, ride one just once, and you'll see a huge difference.

Wal-Mart assemblers are NOT bike experts. They're hacks, who are merely in a rush to get the bikes out on the floor. If you buy this (or any) bike from W/M, be prepared to tune it up yourself, or pay around $75.00 to have it done for you. Yep, that's almost HALF the cost of what you paid for the thing!

When I had mine, I immediately took the flimsy-looking mudguard off, ditched the seat, and added a bunch of bells and whistles (mostly upgraded shocks). Ironically, a good set of shocks can run you about 3 times what you paid for the bike, so you can see the reasoning behind spending the extra bucks if you're gonna get serious about mountain biking.

But, hey...if you're a casual rider, then this is a sharp bike for the money, with just enough cool features to make you happy. Or give you the fever for a FAR more expensive bike.... :)

    Pros: nice riding looks good

Cons: cheap mud guard & no chain guard

Bought this bike 2weeks a go had a 06 xr200 great bike till a neighbor thought he was Evil Kenevil & twisted the chain into a non fixable pretzel along with the back tire so I decided to upgrade to the 250 it is heavier than the 200 but looks & ride's as good as the 200 but these bike are'nt meant for bmxing by long shot they are entry level for the price front derailer is a little off hard time going into third sproket new easy shifters are a little to get used to compared to grip shifters on the 200 wish it came with a rear disc brake would have topped it off as a perfect light duty bike im 40 and still enjoy riding a nice decent bike & these look & ride nice for the money next is the black comb.

    Mongoose XR250 Mountain Bike

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Jun 1, 2007 | 2 out of 2 found this 26" Mens' Mongoose XR250 Full-Suspension Mountain Bike review helpful

Pros: Feels light, great shifting, good brakes, super strong frame, great price

Cons: weak forks, one sided pedals, suspension geometry, no rear disc brake, plastic seat

Overall Im really impressed with my XR250. It rides great, was really cheap and is damn near perfect. I took it to Estrella Mountain in Arizona and had the time of my life. Climbing hills was a little tough but when it was time to go down hill it handled very well, it seamed the faster i went the happier the bike was. To make it perfect it needs the suspension mount on the frame to be narrowed, Ive hit my knees on it a few times," not good for jumpers". The rear suspension linkage needs to let the bike ride a little higher in the back. The forks work but are very weak they also need to ride higher in the stroke, and have more pedal resistance. And the last thing it needs a disc brake in the back, so no matter bad you bend the rim you can still ride, and stop. If you have the money upgrade the suspension and it be dead on!!!!!! Im running a 05 FOX float R in the back, and 120mm 06 Marzocchi all mountain fork up front, got booth on Ebay for about $300.

    great deal

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Jan 7, 2007 | 1 out of 1 found this 26" Mens' Mongoose XR250 Full-Suspension Mountain Bike review helpful

    Pros: many options!

Cons: cheap seat, handlebar fixed height?

i just bought an xr75 and returned it within 24 hours for an xr250. major difference! this bike has a ton of features the other bike didn't have. the suspension is better and shifter's work great. (if your derailers are off a little that only means you need to adjust them). my derailers were fine so the bike shifts great. the grips are 10 times softer!. the pedals are made of better quality metal.

i don't believe you can adjust the handlebar height. if anyone knows how to do this PLEASE email me.

the mudguard is kind of ugly so i just riped it off. (flimsy)

Check it out thoroughly before you buy it

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Apr 20, 2006

Pros: simple shifting mechanism, lightweight, front disc brake

Cons: too low to ground, not enough pedal resistance

I've had mine less than a month and not very impressed. It's too low to the ground, causing the pedals to scrape when cornering or hopping a curb. This has caused me several crashes already. The front disc brake took some getting used to, but I've learned to love it. I tried adjusting the shifting mechanism and got it all messed up, and I have no manual to figure out how to fix it so now it won't shift into 3rd (front) gear. Even in 21st gear there's hardly any difficulty pedaling, which may be great for some, but I like a bit of resistance for a stronger workout myself. That's just my preference though. The suspension took a little adjusting, but works really well, provided you don't have too much weight on the bike. I wouldn't recommend this bike to anyone, but I also wouldn't tell anyone not to get it. All in all, it's a good lightweight bike, just make sure you know how to make all the neccessary adjustments. I just think I got too small a bike for my size, preferences, and needs.

    It saved my life

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Feb 11, 2006 | 2 out of 5 found this 26" Mens' Mongoose XR250 Full-Suspension Mountain Bike review helpful

    Pros: good suspension

    Cons: wheel came off

I jumped off a 1500 foot cliff with my mongoose xr 250 but i forgot my parachute and almost died. But the mongoose had excellent suspension and saved my life. They need better wheel rods because they bend very easy. The grand canyon is next. I expext to clear it.

    An excellent mountain bike!

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Nov 16, 2005 | 9 out of 9 found this 26" Mens' Mongoose XR250 Full-Suspension Mountain Bike review helpful

Pros: Rapid fire shifting, full suspension with ajustable rear spring, excellent off road tires.

Cons: The front disc brake is cheese! Mud guard on the front is flimsy and cheap, the bike is also heavy.

What can I say. This bike is an excellent buy for the price and handles very smooth. I have taken it on many downhill trails here in the New Mexico mountains and it had never done me wrong. I recommend this bike to anyone who is looking for a reliable, tough bike for a low price!
