Pro Reviews: 16 Biggest Hits (Rmst) (Slip)

  • All Music Guide

As with most country music greats, there is no shortage of Lefty Frizzell anthologies, so the arrival of something as blandsounding as 16 Biggest Hits, especially in light of Columbia/Legacy's excellent 34track Look What Thoughts Will Do collection, does little to prick up the ears of longtime fans. Most of the classics are here "Saginaw, Michigan," "Long Black Veil," "If You've Got the Money I've Got the Time" but the lack of "Shine, Shave, Shower (It's Saturday)" and "Run 'Em Off" makes 16 Biggest Hits more of a sampler than a legitimate overview.

Frizzell smoothed out the rough edges of honky tonk by singing longer, flowing phrases -- essentially, he made honky tonk more acceptable for the mainstream without losing its gritty, bar-room roots.
