    Pros: authentic, touching, true story

    Cons: some liberties taken with actual story line

    This fabulous movie was originally shown on PBS, American Playhouse. Our family has watched it every year since on or around the Chinese New Year. The story is authentic, touching and frighteningly real. (If you read the book, you will discover where... the movie takes liberties with facts - but it doesn't affect the mood and touch of the movie.) You can't help hoping Lalu/Polly lives happily-ever-after, although the chances of this are very slim given her circumstances. This gutsy woman is a great role model, and provides the viewer with an inside look at the discrimination Asians experienced after the Civil War. Performances by Chris Cooper, Rosalind Chao and others are first-class. Highly recommended - the music is unforgettable. Read more Less
