Pro Reviews: 100 Years of American Dixieland Jazz

  • All Music Guide

This Lp does not live up to its potential. The lineup of musicians is pretty impressive (clarinetist Johnny Mince, trumpeter Keith Smith, trombonist Vic Dickenson, tenor-saxophonist Al Gary, pianist Barney Bates, bassist Major Holley and drummer Oliver Jackson) but the four then-recent originals are forgettable and the arrangements for the five standards are just ok. There are some good moments solowise but the project (which has little to do with the album title, particularly since Keith Smith is British) is disappointingly run-of-the-mill considering the caliber of the swing/dixieland players.
