Turn back the clock with the right skin care routine for your years.
What’s the secret to slowing down the signs of aging? It’s as simple as adding one treatment to the daily wash-and-moisturize skincare regimen you already follow. Here, what to use in your 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s and beyond to erase fine lines, wrinkles and age spots in no time. Your Skincare Checklist: A younger-looking you starts with this daily routine: • Cleanse. Wash your face morning and night with a gentle cleanser to remove skin-dulling dirt and oil. • Apply eye cream. Using a cream formulated for this delicate area twice daily will keep fine lines at bay. • Moisturize. Slather a lotion with SPF 30 onto your face, neck and chest in the morning. Keeping skin hydrated and protected from the sun prevents new wrinkles and age spots from forming. • Use a night cream. These products are enriched with vitamins and antioxidants to boost your skin’s natural overnight healing cycle. |
In Your 30s/40s...You may not be in full-fledged wrinkle territory just yet, but these are the years when you will begin to notice subtle lines around your mouth, across your forehead and along the sides of your eyes (hello, crow’s feet). The solution: at-home microdermabrasion, recommends Joel Schlessinger, MD, an Omaha-based dermatologist. Similar in consistency to a facial scrub but more powerful, microdermabrasion creams are made with tiny crystals that buff away dead skin cells, revealing fresher, healthier-looking skin. For the best results, Dr. Schlessinger recommends using these products two to four times a month.

In Your 50s...t’s time to swap the microdermabrasion treatment for something stronger that will combat the deep-set wrinkles and age spots beginning to pop up in your 50s. Your best bet is to start using an at-home chemical peel two to four times per month. “These products deeply exfoliate, removing the topmost layer of your skin to reveal a smoother, more radiant complexion,” explains Jeanine Downie, MD, a Montclair, New Jersey–based dermatologist. Peels typically come in three strengths—light, medium and strong. What’s more, the active ingredients in most peels like glycolic acid and salicylic acid also enhance collagen production to plump skin and shrink pores.

In Your 60s...By the time you enter your 60s, you’ll notice that your skin is drier than ever. What’s to blame? A slowing down of your natural oil production. “Since dehydrated skin is less supple, it accentuates lines and wrinkles,” explains Julie K. Karen, MD, a New York City–based dermatologist. Even worse, dry skin tends to have a rougher texture that doesn’t reflect light, so your complexion may also appear dull. Continue using the at-home peels and consider adding a weekly moisture mask. These contain humectants like glycerin that trap and hold onto water, which helps plump skin and fill in wrinkles.
