Discover handy items that you can score for less at big-box stores.
These days, you don’t have to buy in bulk to make a trip to Costco or BJ’s Wholesale Club worthwhile. Believe it or not, you can buy things like wedding dresses and vacation packages—whether in store or at store-sponsored events—for a steep discount.
1. Eyeglasses: All three chains sell eyeglasses and contacts at steep discounts, and select locations also have in-store optometrists to conduct eye exams. 2. A Wedding Dress: Costco rolled out a roadshow-style bridal dress event at select warehouses this past summer, with savings up to 40% off. 3. Gas: All three chains sell gas at most locations at lower prices—some average 20¢ or 30¢ less per gallon—than comparable stations in the area, says Galanti. 4. Insurance: Select Costco and BJ’s offer competitively-priced insurance plans, including home, auto and even health insurance for small businesses and families. 5. Prescriptions: Costco pharmacy discounts range from 20% to 80% off retail. Sam’s Club on-site pharmacies offer generic medicines at $4 for a 30-day supply and $10 for a 90-day supply. By law, these pharmacies must be open to the public, so even nonmembers can take advantage of savings. 6. A Vacation: Costco and BJ’s sell travel packages, but do your research—their prices may not be the lowest, says Clayman. 7. A Casket: Costco customers can save up to 40% on caskets; BJ’s members can save up to 60% (sold online only).
