'The War' by Ken Burns
Documentary filmmaker Ken Burns captivates viewers with true, dramatic stories in this comprehensive PBS series, "The War." Examining one of the most catastrophic events the world's population has ever endured, World War II, it focuses on the U.S. perspective in seven parts.
As an avid WWII movie fan, I thought this TV series would tone down the realism of war casualties and devastation. I was wrong. Each episode reveals fascinating facts matched with incredible, historical footage of the American experience during times of inconceivable tribulation. This series describes wartime accounts through intense interviews with surviving veterans to heart-breaking letter excerpts written by soldiers to their loved ones at home.
I bow down to Burns for creating this unforgettable film -- now available on DVD with an optional companion book.

Al Gore's New Book
The spotlight shines on Al Gore, again, with a new book, "The Assault on Reason." This time, skipping the topic of global warming, he touts, "How the politics of fear, secrecy, and blind faith subvert wise decision-making, degrade our democracy, and put our country and our world in peril." Are these words of wisdom, a battle cry for a second presidential shot, both, or none of the above?
