Tankless Water Heaters
It's all over the news: Tankless water heaters offer better energy efficiency than conventional storage water heaters. Unlike storage water heaters that continuously expend energy to heat stored water, tankless water heaters heat water only when hot water is in use. This technology can save you up to 50 percent on your hot water heating bill.
Tankless water heaters also:
- Provide an endless flow of hot water on demand, so you won't run out of hot water when you're using it.
- Last longer than storage water heaters because they use a flow-through technology that reduces unit corrosion and mineral buildup.
- Are compact and wall-mountable to save you floor space.

But these devices will double your electric bill. Wait until the technology is better before buying!
John says:
I had a company come and give me an evaluation I was told that I needed a 3/4" gas line as opposed to the 1/2" existing. Can someone tell me if this is true?

To answer JOHN;yes it is true, because to produce the required hot water, your tankless must put the water thru a heat exchanger, which is a 'restriction',so you do need a 3/4"line to supply the unit to deliver the proper amount of gas....and by the way,i've had one in my house for weel over 5 yrs,and it works like a dream...

Is it necessary to install separate units at each tap or will one centrally located device work ?

These things seem to be popular where I live. I would imagine that massive amounts of gas / electricity would be needed to heat the water, so I'm skeptical about the price savings.

A great inexpensive alternative to a tankless hot water heater is the Hot Water Lobster instant hot water valve at only $179.95. It conserves water while also giving convenient access to instant hot water throughout the entire home! It works off of the homes existing plumbing and water heater!
The Hot Water Lobster uses no electricity and is pump free, so it creates no noise. It is made in the U.S.A., has a 10-year warranty, and can be easily installed in under 10 minutes.

If you can't afford a tankless heater, you can take cost-effective measures to reduce your costs. For my oil hot water heater, I reduced temperatures, installed an insulating blanket, serviced the unit, and put in a temper tank to raise the temp of incoming cold water. Also put in a heat recovery system. Sound complicated but really it wasn't. Go to http://www.savehouseholdenergy.com/save-hot-water.html to see how I did this.
