Top 10 Flickr Cameras
I stumbled on an interesting site the other day that features a list of the most popular cameras used by people who upload their photos to Flickr. I'm a huge fan of Flickr and thought this was an intriguing use of their data, which Flickr provides through open APIs. Here's the list of the Top 10 cameras for the week of August 14th (drum roll please)...
- Nikon D50
- Nikon D70
- Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT
- Canon EOS 20D
- Canon EOS 350D Digital
- Nikon D70s
- Cybershot
- Canon PowerShot S2 IS
- Canon EOS Digital Rebel
- Nikon D200
The complete list of top 100 makes and models is updated weekly on FD's Flickr Top Digital Cameras page. What's unique about this list is that it's not based on what products people are buying or rating, but rather it shows which cameras people are actually using - right now. It's also cool that the list was built outside of Flickr using their public APIs. A nice enhancement would be to integrate FD's list with the Yahoo! Shopping APIs to provide price comparison and other purchase features.
I hope we continue to see similar lists emerge for other product categories such as the most popular MP3 Players from users of the Yahoo! Music Engine, iTunes, or other online music services. What are your favorite online resources for Top 10 shopping lists?

Nice to see that Nikon and Canon cameras top the list. I believe, however, that the Canon Digital Rebel XT (in the USA) and the Canon 350d (in the rest of the world) are the same camera. I was worried that little toy cameras or even cell phone cameras would make the list...

I'm surprised to not even see an Olympus on the list. (I use a Nikon D50) smack!
djtakitus says:
The numbers for the 350d and rebel xt should be combined, as they are the same camera. That would probably put it at the top as a matter of fact. FIX YO LIST YAHOO
JoeLaz says:
the list is based on EXIF data pulled directly from the images posted to flickr, hense the duplicate listings and lack of cellphones. since i was referencing FD's list, i didn't feel it was appropriate to edit to remove duplicates.

i am suprised not to see any Olympus camera on the list. I use E500.

nice post. interesting to see how many high quality cameras are so far up the list. It really speaks to who Flickr's audience really is... it ain't your mom's photo sharing site.
paul a says:
that is great info. I have a D50 and I love it. After using a small non-adjustable 1.3 mg pixel unit for a few years I am glad I made the purchase. Flickr is cool.
chris says:
I'm a big fan of the Nikon d70 so great to see it on the list!

the numbers for the D70 and the D70s could probably also be combined, since they are basically the same camera
Jamie says:
I just bought the canon eos digital rebel xt and it is great; just started uploading more photos to flickr from it; so maybe it will move up a spot or two
Mark Tranchant says:
The list is not totally robust. For example, the converted RAW images from my Minolta do not have EXIF information attached.
joemultigrain says:
I suspect it's an unintended consequence, but, entertainingly, it looks like Sony's gaming the results by using the generic 'Cybershot' name for all their cameras.
iceman9294 says:
Great list! I just bought the Nikon D80 2 weeks ago as I am getting back into photograpy. Just validated my purchase on another leve....
