Pants Questions

Q:I want to make a pair of jeans into cut-offs. What length do you recommend? Any other tips?

A:I always think it's best to go shorter rather than longer. Start by trying on your jeans and rolling them up to the desired length. You may have to cut some off on the bottom to do this since denim can be a bit heavy; unless you have size zero thighs, it'll be hard to get past the knee area. Once you've decided on the length—I like to go halfway up the thigh—make a fold giving yourself at least a half inch more. This way, when they're washed and start to fray they won't be too short. I like to then iron where I've made the fold so when I'm ready, I have a nice clean line to cut. The beauty of cut-offs is they don't have to be perfect; in fact, they always look a little better when it's clear you've done it yourself.

Q:I feel a bit frumpy when I wear my khaki chinos, but I love the way they look in magazines. What's the key to looking stylish and feminine in them?

A:First things first: Analyze the cut of the chinos. The smallest detail in the cut or drape of the pant can make the difference in whether or not they'll flatter your body and complement your personal style. Gap and J. Crew offer a good range of styles—my personal favorite are the trouser cut chinos, which are low cut and have a wide leg. Next, pair your chinos with any other items that might normally be considered dressy. For example, wear them with a sparkly top or a floaty chiffon shirt, or a pair of spikey heels and a blazer. Try them with a fitted sweater and long dangly earrings. Even a simple crewneck tee with your chinos can look cool with a pretty scarf and colorful flats. Good luck!

Q:I love the look of wearing jeans with high heel sandals, but I don't know exactly how to pull it off. Any tips?

A:A few seasons ago it seemed like every fashion editor in New York (myself included) was wearing their jeans long—dragging on the street over their heels. Despite the obvious sanitation issue (hemlines dragging on the streets—yuck!) the look has survived and has paved the way for all sorts of jeans-with-heels combinations.

1. If your jeans are straight leg and sport a boyish cut, try cuffing them up to expose the ankles. It's sort of a sexy '50s girl look.
2. If your jeans are slim-cut or super skinny, try hemming them so that your entire ankle is exposed first.
3. If your jeans are boot-cut or wide leg, make sure they are long enough to almost hit the ground in your chosen pair of heels.
4. Avoid mule style sandals with the longer styles of denim—they will get stuck under your heel when you walk.
5. If you have a favorite pair of jeans, buy two pairs and hem one at a flat length and the other to your heels. It's worth it.
