Nails & Hands Questions

Q:What's the best way to speed up drying time for nail polish?

A:Ah, the nail polish question. Celebrity manicurist Deborah Lippmann warns against applying while the previous coats are still wet. "Apply very thin coats of polish and wait two minutes between each layer," she says. "If you don't wait, the polish will smudge much more easily." Fast-drying top coats are helpful (my favorites are Lippmann's On a Clear Day and Seche Vite Dry Fast Top Coat, but keep in mind that they only dry the top layer, so the whole process negates itself if you don't follow the thin coat rule). A good alternative is the Creative Nail Design Solar Speed Spray—it has a pleasant almond smell and moisturizes the nails and cuticles. Your base coat makes a difference as well. "Don't use a ridge filler if you're in a hurry," says Lippman. "A nail strengthener, which is thinner, is a better option." Try OPI Natural Nail Base Coat. And remember—patience is a virtue.

Q:No matter how diligent I am about maintaining my cuticles, they always look ragged. What should I be doing?

A:Moisture treatments frequently applied—so carry them in your bag—are the key. For thickened cuticles, Z. Bigatti Enhance is amazing. For dry brittle ones, Sally Hansen Maximum Growth Treatment Pen works well. And Dior Crème Abricot not only keeps cuticles in good shape, but also does multiple duty for lips and elbows.

Q:Are there any products that will lighten the little age spots that have started developing on my hands?

A:Hand creams are becoming as high-tech as facial moisturizers since sun damage and age is so apparent on your hands. The wizards at Lancôme, for example, developed the amazing Absolue Hand Anti-Age Spot Replenishing Unifying Treatment. It contains SPF 15 and with continuous use, will even out your skin tone. If you decide not to go that route, you should definitely switch to a product that contains sunscreen to prevent even more damage. I'm obsessed with Ole Henriksen Hands Forward Renewing Hand Cream SPF 15.
