Dresses & Skirts Questions

Q:I love the look of full skirts, but since I'm a little overweight, they make me look heavy. Any tips on wearing them?

A:The style of your full skirt will make all the difference. Stay away from tailored boxy looking skirts or skirts that are too narrow near your ankles. Make sure you pick skirts that are A-line—if it's snug at the top and flares nicely at the bottom, the skirt will have a flattering, flounce-y look. For shoes, give yourself some added height with chunky heeled sandals—they never fail to make you appear slimmer. To further prevent the potato-sack look, make sure you pair your skirt with a top that's fairly slim-fitting. Wrap tops work well.

Q:Please provide the final word: Is it ever appropriate to wear black to a wedding?

A:If it's a fancy urban evening wedding, by all means, bust out the black floor-length gown. But if you're talking about daytime matrimonials, stick with color. (As a rule, it's best to steer clear of white or ivory so as not to compete with the bride.) That said, allow us to suggest a couple of options: A bias-cut knee-length—or longer—dress in a punchy bright or soft pastel shade is always a wise choice, as is one in a silky floral print.

Q:How can I wear a miniskirt to work?

A:This is a tricky one. The miniskirt is only appropriate for a very relaxed work environment. I would say a good rule of thumb is this: If you can't wear jeans to work, don't wear a miniskirt. If, however, you work in an office that does not have a conservative dress code, wear one with pointy flats in the summer and flat knee-high boots with tights in the fall/winter. Also keep in mind that miniskirts vary in length; I would suggest one that hits at least midthigh—no higher! Wearing it with a looser, boxy shaped sweater is also a very chic way to wear a mini. It's all about balancing out the sexy bottom with a more conservative top.

Q:I have short legs and don't like to wear too-high heels. What kind of skirt will make my bottom half look longer and leaner?

A:Try an A-line skirt that hits at midknee—it'll show the sexy top taper of calves, thereby making legs seem lengthier and shapelier. A miniskirt is another option and perfect for warm weather. Be sure to pair it with flat sandals—the combo of a short skirt and skimpy shoes visually elongates legs.
