Keep a Laptop From Overheating: The Best Lap Desks

One of the most common problems with laptops is heat. Most users place their laptop on their lap or a pillow. This ends up covering a large portion of the vents on the bottom edges and even back of the computer. Some laptops, especially custom models, are notorious for overheating. Placing the computer on your lap can actually heat legs to the point of severe discomfort. Luckily, there are low-cost devices available that not only solve the laptop-overheating problem, but make them more comfortable to use on laps.

Targus Notebook Portable LapDesk

The Targus Notebook Portable LapDesk is perfect for both laps and desks. Unlike many other options, the Targus model extends to either side of the actual desk to place a mouse or other accessories. The desk has small holes in it to dissipate heat and keep your laptop from sitting flush on your lap. If using the LapDesk on a sturdy pillow or desk, you can unfold the legs from the back to create a more ergonomic setup. This desk will run you between $10 and $50, depending on the size and model you choose.

Belkin Cooling Pad

The Belkin Laptop Cooling Stand isn't quite as comfortable on laps, but it does have a USB fan at the bottom of the desk to promote cooling. You can use this stand with or without the fan running. The dip design keeps your laptop elevated in the center. Legs in the back of the desk allow you to create an incline for better usage positions. The pad is effective, but may not be the best for legs, especially with them unfolded. White and black models are available for less than $40 at most retailers.

Logitech Cooling Pad

The Logitech Cooling Pad works similar to the Belkin Cooling Pad. Instead of a fan in the center of the pad, the Logitech fan extends to the back of the desk. This provides better airflow, while maintaining comfort on laps. There are no legs, but a naturally curved design elevates laptops into an ergonomic position no matter where you use it. Different colors and even slightly different designs are available, ranging from $20 to $50.

If you want to ensure your laptop lasts, make sure you use some type of cooling desk or lap desk. They prevent laptops from overheating and make them far more comfortable to use.
