Sony introduces the world's smallest and lightest high definition consumer camcorder with full HD resolution based on HDV 1080i, the Sony Handycam HDR-HC1. The ultra-compact HDR-HC1 Handycam camcorder fits comfortably in your hand, while delivering high-definition picture quality and lighting detail on both video and digital still images. The HDR-HC1 features Sony's CMOS imaging sensor technology, designed to deliver faster image processing speeds for richer colors, more vivid detail, and significantly less glare from reflected light. The Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T* lens further enhances image clarity and richness, even when shooting in low light. The HDR-HC1 also features a 2.7-inch wide hybrid, touch-panel LCD screen to access menu options. You can switch between 16:9 and 4:3 aspect ratios to see exactly how your content will be viewed on television. Other convenient features include fully automatic controls, a built-in microphone for audio quality, an intelligent pop-up flash, and Super SteadyShot image stabilization. You can even record your own high definition video in complete darkness with Sony's Super NightShot Infrared System, which adds the greatest amount of range and detail to your images in low- to no-light conditions.

    Pros: Incredable image quality

    Cons: Learning curve on features

I purchased my HDR-HC1 in March of 2005. The camera is simple to operate, produces incredable video results and hasn't had any mechanical problems so far. I highly recommend the optional larger battery, the 71 series. There are so many usefull and ar...tistic features that I don't think I'll ever use but that's okay because the auto settings make operation a breeze. The optical zoom works well allthough the zoom button is ultra sensative, zooming in and out a little too quickly. The steady shot feature works very well, disable this feature if using a tripod for even greater video quality. I highly recommend the High definition casettes to ensure your getting the best images. Stay away from internal hard drive high definition cameras as you won't be able to watch HD once you download it to your computer unless you can afford a computer with the HD software and a Blu-ray/HD burner. With tapes you can pop them into the camera and watch anytime you wish. Read more Less

Pros: Excellent Camera, takes great picture

Cons: Battery Life, HD movie file editing on computer, price to high!

This camcorder is a pure joy to operate. I really like the balance of manual controls and the automatic ones. The touch screen metering is really a nice feature. The built in mic is great sounding! Image stabilization works better than any I have eve...r used. A few low points... Low light performance is not great. Grainy dark and ugly in dim lit rooms. The video tends to look somewhat smeared even when shooting in strong light. Bottom loading tape makes it hard to use on a tripod. Editing HDV on a computer is still not as smooth and easy as editing regular SDV. You really should demo one to see how it will work for you in low light, so wait until you do see it for yourself before you spend a dime on this camcorder! CC charges 15% restocking fee if youtake it back. I know because I did. okay, DON'T buy this battery!
