Pros: build features ease of use image quality iso
Cons: Minor details but that's carping criticism
I just bought this camera as an upgrade from the EOS Rebel XT 350D and it is more than an upgrade. This is quite a camera. It's built like a tank but I like the feel of it better than my old XT. I had my XT for four years and was never quite comforta...ble with it - I feel comfortable with this camera after only a few days. The menus and controls I find much easier to use than the XT and the picture quality is superb. I took some pictures at 2000 ISO yesterday and there is very little visible noise except at full size. I especially like the Quick Menu feature, the one-touch RAW+JPEG button, the Quick Control Dial and the fact that different automatic shooting modes are not on the Mode Dial but have been relegated to a menu and replaced on the dial with three user defined modes. The price is relatively high, I suppose, but when you figure that you are getting a camera that approaches the professional models for under $2000 even the price does not seem that bad. Pros: 8fps,Live View,HD movie mode, external mic connector
Cons: mono microphone recording, AGC on audio
This camera was my upgrade from a Rebel XS. Though the XS is an outstanding camera for its price, I wanted more. Right after unboxing the 7D, I started taking high ISO shots to see what kind of noise was generated. Wow! I had usable shots @ ISO 2500 ...handheld. They would print just fine on 4x6 sheets with little issues. The 7D is like a Ferrari when it comes to sheer shutter speed. At 8fps, it is only 2fps slower than the top-of-the-line professional sports model Canon 1Ds. That said, the 7D has a higher megapixel count and is very useful for huge prints like poster size and larger. Finally, the wireless flash control built in to the camera is awesome. It controls my 480EX-II external flash with ease and it's nice to not have to buy a 580EX just to have the wireless slave control capability. Great job, Canon! On the cons side, my only gripe is with the audio capability of the camera. The built-in mic is mono and not very good. There is an external mic connector, which is great, but the built in Automatic Gain Control (AGC) causes the noise floor of the audio to come up when there are quiet periods. It could be fixed by changing the firmware to allow for manual gain setting of input levels. It's my humble opinion that the 7D is a great value for the price and can make avid amateurs and most professionals quite happy with its performance.
