The COOLPIX 8700 and its newly developed CCD offer 8.0 effective megapixels for an astounding high resolution of 3,264 x 2,448 pixels. Quality like this makes images of exceptionally high definition possible even when cropped. Nikon's exclusive ED glass offers incredible color, contrast and sharpness. The COOLPIX 8700's exclusive image processing technology takes true-to-life images a step closer to reality. A 256-segment Matrix Metering system enables optimal exposures in even the most challenging lighting environments, while Matrix Auto White Balance neutralizes color deviations created by ambient light sources. Both advanced features allow the COOLPIX 8700 to preserve a faithful reproduction of color, detail and gradation.

    I'm pretty happy

Pros: light weight, small size, fine lens

Cons: slow auto focus particularly in low light

After looking hard at the 8 megapixel cameras, this one seemed to be the best mix for my type of broad use. After 3 weeks of use, I still feel the same. For my purpose the 35 MM equiv lens is wide enough, and I am glad for the 280 equiv of zoom. This ...is an excellent lens system. The low light photos that I have taken with a tripod are very good, but I am not happy with the low light auto focus, or the the amount of light I can capture in hand held shots. My only other complaint (I seem to be listing more complaints than praise, but that is only because I have only a few complaints and they are easier to list) is that it is hard to remove a microdive from the memory slot. Microdrives should be held only at the edges, and it is just not possible to pull one out from just the edge. Read more Less

    Nikon Coolpix 8700

It delivers sharp, high-resolution images with very good color and low noise (at least at ISO 50), and has ample control for experienced shooters, while remaining approachable for rank beginners in full-auto mode, or when using one of its preprogrammed scene modes. Read more

    Nikon COOLPIX 8700

The 8x Zoom Nikkor lens is a steady performer, giving you good reach at 280mm (35mm format equivalent). This is also the longest reach among the five eight-megapixel cameras. Read more
