    An American classic...

    So, yes...the movie has begun to show its age. The language isnt hip-hop, rap-type or even cool. The violence is stark but subtle, unlike todays literal bloodbaths. However, even the most jaded of todays viewers have to appreciate the complexity of t...he dances and the incredible soundtrack. The songs Maria and Tonight have become standards of pop music and references to the film have been made for decades. It is a retelling and modification of Romeo & Juliet and for my money, Natalie Wood will always be one of the most beautiful women in screen history. The vocals of Marnie Nixon (as Maria -- she also did Audrey Hepburns vocals in My Fair Lady) are truly the best of all the Marias (including the original Broadway play -- Carole Lawrence and the more recent operatic version featuring Kiri Te Kanawa (sp?)). I also have the Criterion Collection version of this on laser disc and this DVDs transfer is just as good.Not everyone is going to like this, simply because the gangspeak is pretty silly sounding today. However, the storyline is still valid, as is Bernsteins music and the dancing of Rita Moreno, George Chakaris and the girls & guys of both gangs. If you dont watch anything else on this DVD, at least check out the dance on the rooftops to America and the pre-rumble quintet version of Tonight. If that fails to impress you, then you probably wont want to see this film all the way through. Read more Less

    personally I think that this is the greatest movie in the entire world! if I could give it more that 5 stars I sure would I wish I could give this movie 100 stars! I could watch this movie over, over, over, and over!!!!! that is how much I LOVE IT! I... am only 15 yrs old and I swear that I have seen this movie over 105 times! (give or take a few) well thank you for your time & I think that everybody should go out and rent this fabulious movie anytime you're just sitting at home with nothing to do, I am sure yuo will love it just as much as I do!     This story itself is one that is powerful enough to bring many viewers to tears. The actor's acting and director's work with the scenes really bring out the overall effect of this popular musical. I love this musical!

    A classic and a must see for the entire family. An updated "Romeo and Juliet" with the two "waring families" being those from Puerto Rico and from Poland.     This movie is a reason to own a dvd player as well as an excellent sound system. However much you had enjoyed the movie in the past, the clarity of the print and vitality of the sound will astound you, and make it a much more intense experience than ...sitting in a movie theater.     natalie wood was so great in this film.
    this film should have had a lived happily ever
    after ending instead of having the guy die in natalie wood's arms.that part always makes me cry.i love this movie.
